Updates, Updates

Lana is hanging out at the hospital. Hopefully she’s getting some sleep since she didn’t get enough last night. Carmen is doing better today after several days of fever and severe congestion. Her night nurses are wonderful and always seem to know the right “tricks” to help Carmen!!

Speaking of nurses, our case manager called this morning to let us know that Carmen was approved for four more hours per day of nursing coverage. We’re super excited and grateful! Thank you, thank you, thank you, God!!! And thank you, Tricia. The additional hours will be huge.

Thank you all for your prayers! We’re hanging in and hanging on and will persevere through these trying times! I sort of follow a pastor in Charlotte, NC named Steven Furtick. I haven’t read his blog in quite awhile but decided to click over to his site earlier today. This was his current blog post. I think he was writing to me :) . He might have been writing to you too.

Thank you all for your offers of support. Thank you, Monica, for sitting at the house last night so I could go visit Lana while Lauren slept at home. And a big THANK YOU to Sun, who drove over to the hospital yesterday afternoon to sit with Carmen in the parking lot while I went into the hospital to visit Lana. Children under 12 aren’t allowed — or are greatly discouraged from going — into the hospital because of rampant swine flu. Please forgive me if I’m forgetting anyone else. My memory isn’t as good as Lana’s!

Beginning to Dread Wednesdays

Lana is back at the hospital. This time, she was admitted. We’re hoping that it’s just overnight but are expecting it to be longer.

In short, we went in for her follow-up doctor appointment early this afternoon. Apparently, a week of strict bed rest didn’t quite do the trick. Upon examination, the doctors found that Lana is 1 cm dilated. She’s in the hospital now. They are giving her additional medication to try to stop the contractions and are also giving her steroids that will increase Baby Hope’s lung capacity in the event of a delivery in the near-term.

I’ll head back to the hospital tonight, after the night nurse arrives to take care of Carmen and after Lauren is asleep (kids aren’t allowed at the hospital due to rampant swine flu). I’m going to add a Twitter feed on the right side of the web page to post short updates. Look at the “Twitter Feed” section.

Appreciate the prayers!

Hoping She Stays Put

Thank you for all of your prayers for the baby. Thanks to Monica, Cristie, Karen, Angie and MiYoung who jumped in to help. Cristie, Lauren wants to know when you can come over again to play! I don’t know who cleaned up our kitchen, but thanks so much!

I’ll try to give a brief update. I am on medication that makes me really shaky so typing is a bit of a challenge. I can tell you anything you want to know about Tay Sachs, but I am unfamiliar with the world of pre-term labor so forgive my ignorance!

Yesterday, I went in for another ultrasound to check my cervix. I’ve been having random contractions for weeks now so the doctors keep checking to make sure nothing else is going on. Well, the ultrasound revealed that my cervix went from 3.5cm two weeks ago to 2.1cm yesterday. And I have 2cm of funneling. Apparently that is not good because the doctor sent me straight to the hospital for monitoring. The monitor showed that I was having contractions every 2 minutes. I could feel some of them but not all. I was given three shots of Terbutaline and one tablet. Good gracious that stuff is strong! My heart started racing and I started shaking and feeling woozy. When the nurse realized I was on the verge of passing out, she checked my blood pressure and it was 84/40. She gave me Sprite and the most delicious egg salad sandwich (ha!) and I felt better. The medication worked and the contractions slowed down and stopped.

Poor Dave had just flown to North Carolina on business when I called to tell him what was going on. His boss told him to go back home so Dave got back on a plane and came home. Good bosses shouldn’t be taken for granted, that’s for sure!

Now I am home on strict bed rest. I can get up to go the bathroom and take a shower and then back to bed or the couch I go. Honestly, I don’t think I could do much else anyway as this Terbutaline is making me sick. I am taking 5mg every 4 hours, around the clock.

I have a follow-up appointment in a week and the doctor said something about a test to see how likely I am to deliver in the next two weeks and another cervix check. She also warned me that I may end up in the hospital so to take this bed rest stuff seriously.

So, please, please pray that this baby stays put. I am just 23 weeks and 4 days so she needs a lot more time.

We thought it might be nice if you had a name to pray for instead of just praying for “the baby”. So, we are letting you know that we are naming her Hope. :)

Quick Update

I just got off the phone with Lana. I don’t want anyone to get too hysterical but we’d definitely appreciate your prayer.

As Lana mentioned previously, the doctors have been a bit concerned about her lifting Carmen during her pregnancy. She went in for another ultrasound this afternoon and they want to do some additional tests because it looks as though things are less than ideal. That’s about all the detail I have for you right now.

Again, please don’t get too excited! Everything may be just fine. And even if it’s not just fine, we know that God is more than able to get us through whatever the future may hold.

But please do pray. Thanks!

102 Degrees

Lauren had strep throat this week and now Carmen has a fever. This evening Carmen started breathing loudly so Dave repositioned and suctioned her to see if that would help. I took her temperature and it was 102. The strange thing was that her hands and feet were icy cold and her forehead was very cool to the touch. But, her cheeks and nose were very hot and flushed.

Carmen doesn’t usually catch what goes around our house. Last year we all had the flu except for Carmen. Many times we have had colds and Carmen hasn’t gotten them. We will take her to the doctor tomorrow morning to check for strep. Maybe its not strep but another aspiration pneumonia. Thank you for your prayers for Carmen!

I had a doctor’s appointment today and the verdict is in. The doctor wants me to stop picking up Carmen. I have been having random contractions for several weeks now. I KNOW that picking up a 40 lb. child and carrying her around is not a good idea for a 22 week pregnant lady but not picking Carmen up is much easier said than done!!! We have 12 hours of night nursing and then I take care of Carmen during the day. Dave and I are talking about different possibilities and we would surely appreciate your prayers that we can figure out a plan.
