Random Stuff for Saturday

I unpacked the camera yesterday and realized how much I have missed taking pictures for the past few weeks. I totally enjoy documenting our lives.

Considering the state of our half-unpacked/half-still-packed house, I have just a few pictures to share today.

This is our little yard. The best part of this yard? Dave doesn’t have to do a thing to it! Our rent includes a weekly gardener. Neither one of us like yard work at all so this is positively wonderful! :)

After just two weeks in California, Hope’s hair is getting blonder!

Since we sold or gave away almost all of our furniture before we left Maryland, we have been on a Craigslist and thrift store hunt for new (to us) pieces. Dave picked up a leather sofa off Craigslist and we love it! Lauren wanted a picture with her American Girl slippers that we found at a consignment shop for $3.

Dave has always said that once I get something into my head, nothing stops me. He has also remarked that over the past few years, I sort of lost my way. But, I’m finding my way back. In my former life, I would tackle a chore/job and keep going until I finished. This week’s chore has been the tile grout.

Before you think I am crazy, let me explain. I love to walk around barefoot or in little white socks. I do not like having dirty feet. So, our floors have to be clean.

I thought the tile floor was clean until the carpet cleaning guy came over and pointed out the dirty grout. Now, he probably pointed that out because he also cleans and seals grout. For $2 per square foot. Considering that we have about 500 tiles, I decided to clean it myself. Mr. Carpet Cleaner had no idea what he started!

I googled cleaning tile grout and found a couple of good ways to clean: Magic Eraser and Oxiclean. I MUCH prefer the Magic Eraser method because it is so easy and less messy. For the hall and edges, it worked beautifully. Lauren and I put on gloves and scrubbed away. The kitchen tiles were much dirtier and required Oxiclean. I sprinkled Oxiclean on the grout, placed sopping wet towels on top, and let it sit for a couple of hours. After letting the Oxiclean work its magic, I removed the towels and used a stiff scrubby brush to remove all the stuck-on dirt. Then, I mopped up all the mess. Ahhhhhhhh, clean!

You can see the difference here. The back half is clean. The front half looks like McDonald’s tile floors!

That’s all for now. I’ve got to get ready for the day. We are still having all kinds of fun here and enjoying beautiful San Diego!

Busy Little Bees

Wow, it’s hard to believe that we’ve been in California for a week. It has been a BUSY week.

Believe it or not, we haven’t even unpacked the camera yet. I thought about it but then realized that the camera bag is locked and I’m not sure where the key is…

I’ll go back and write more about the past week but in a nutshell:

  • Last Monday we went to Shar’s funeral, did the final walk-thru of our townhouse with the landlord, and caught a plane to California.
  • Tuesday we got the keys to our new house from our new landlord. Our stuff arrived via ABF U-pack shortly after and then our cars arrived via Auto Zipper. Perfect timing! Dave made a run to In-n-Out burger.
  • We spent all day Wednesday and Thursday cleaning (the house needed some TLC) and unpacking.
  • I can’t remember Friday. I think we found Trader Joe’s and a fish taco place? If you’ve never had fish tacos, they are delicious!
  • Saturday we started our quest for furniture at consignment/thrift stores. We sold or gave away almost all of our furniture before we moved so we are starting from scratch. We found a super cute vintage night stand for Lauren’s room. Somehow we ended up at Best Buy and Dave ended up buying a TV. So, now we have a TV but no couch to sit on!
  • Sunday we went to church and then hit a few more consignment/thrift stores. We didn’t find any furniture but we did find a few treasures: a tripod, a pretty serving bowl, a pair of pink Crocs, a pair of American Girl slippers, etc.
  • Monday we celebrated our 13th wedding anniversary with….another run to In-n-Out burger! We are seriously high class. Nothing but the best for us! :)
  • On Monday Dave started work. He arrived to a very decorated office. He took pictures which he will share later.
  • Tuesday, today, I’m waiting on the cable guy and the appliance guy to show up. Dave is looking forward to watching TV and I am looking forward to doing laundry! Tonight Dave is going to check out a leather sofa I found on Craigslist. Hopefully we will soon have a place to sit!

It is soooooooooo beautiful here. We can see the ocean from our upstairs front windows and the mountains from the back. We have 10 little palm trees in our backyard and lots of flowers. The rent includes a gardener, which Dave is positively thrilled about!

The temperatures are consistently upper 60s at night and low 70s during the day. Tons of sunshine and no humidity! We have air conditioning here but haven’t even thought of turning it on.

Our first day here Lauren met the neighborhood kids and has been playing about 12 hours per day ever since. Cracks me up every time the doorbell rings and nine little kids are standing there, ready for Lauren to come outside and play! It is so very different here than in Maryland. The kids play outside all day here. And they play together. We live in a cul-de-sac and they run from yard to yard, playing. They’ve had scavenger hunts and frog hunts, marshmallow roasts and water balloon fights. Lauren is loving this! And we are loving this for her.

13 Years

Thirteen years ago, I married my best friend. Dave, you have made my life an adventure. I love you.

I Went on a Walk and…

Before we left Maryland, we had lunch with our dear friends, Del and Cristina, at their house. After a great meal and conversation, I went downstairs to tell Lauren it was time to go. On my way back upstairs, I passed the following note hanging on the garage door. Elise is the 8 year old daughter of Del and Cristina.

I'm really glad we didn't walk to California!

After arriving late last night, Day 1 in California was everything we hoped it would be. We met our landlord first thing in the morning for Lana to sign the lease and to get into our new house. A couple of hours later, our stuff arrived in two 6′x7′x8′ containers. An hour after that, our cars arrived. Our first official meal as Californians was…Chick-fil-A. Then we went to Super Wal-Mart to get some needed cleaning supplies, food basics, etc.

Several neighbors stopped by to welcome us to the neighborhood. There were quite a few children playing in the cul-de-sac. Lauren asked if she could “walk around the oval” and within a minute was chatting with one of the girls.

Mom and Dad, we went on an airplane flight and we will not come back Love, Dave and Lana!

PS. We do plan on visiting but we really hope this becomes home.

Top Ten Things I’ll Miss About Maryland

More About You Mondays

[This post is part of an ongoing blog series to get to know each other better. Have you read and participated in the other "More About You Monday" questions?]

***

A few nights ago, we went over to our neighbors’ house for dinner. Someone asked me what I’ll miss about Maryland. Without further ado, here’s my top ten list, starting with our neighbors but in no particular order:

  • Azeb and Abiy. Every week, Lauren’s best friend, Maya, would come over to our house after school on Tuesdays and Lauren would go over to Maya’s house after school on Fridays. Thank you, Azeb and Abiy, for trusting us with your daughter. We knew we could completely trust you with our daughter as well. Thank you!

BFFs

  • The People. OK, not all the people since, in general, we think Marylanders are stressed-out, grumpy and rude. But along the way, we met so many wonderful people who have enriched our lives. Thank you!
  • Small Group. As written in this post, we met with three other couples almost every single Saturday night for several years. You guys mean the world to us and we seriously doubt that we could have made it through the past four years without you. Eric & Claudia, CF & Indira, Del & Cristina…thank you!

So Much Fun and Personal Growth

  • Seasons. We won’t miss the humid, hot summers. Nor will we miss the cold winters without enough snow. We won’t miss the allergies that come with Spring or the blustery Fall winds. But there is a two-week period in late April or early May and also a two-week period in late September or early October. For about four weeks a year, the weather in Maryland simply can’t be beat. And because of the other seasons here, we appreciate those four weeks that much more. We will definitely miss you, “those four weeks!”

Fall Can Be Beautiful in MD

  • Co-Workers. I’m not leaving the company that employs me; I’m simply transferring to the San Diego office. And since we’re fairly seamless as a bi-coastal organization, I often work with people in the San Diego office and, in some cases, work with more people in that office than the one here in MD. Yet there’s something about walking the halls and stopping by offices or having people stop by my office to chat that can’t be replicated over the phone. I’ll miss our coffee runs and, more recently, our mad dashes for frozen yogurt between meetings! I’ll miss the smiles on your faces when things are going well. I’ll miss being there to help bear your burdens — even if only in small ways — when things aren’t going so well. While we will continue working together, I look forward to your visits to San Diego and even look forward to my inevitable visits to Maryland. Thank you for putting up with me!
  • Softball Teams. I’ve played on two different softball teams with many of the same people for the past 5 years. Some of our teams have been really good while others have struggled a bit. But even though I’m pretty competitive, I loved being a part of losing teams almost as much as being a part of winning teams…all because of my teammates. I looked forward to hanging out with you all each Wednesday and Thursday night and was disappointed when games were rained out. You’re awesome! Thank you.

That Team Won a Championship!

  • My Boss. I’ve had the same boss since 2005 and have worked with her for ten years. While Lynn will continue to be my boss, we will no longer sit in the same corridor, building or state. Lynn, I’ll miss our candid and impromptu discussions about the latest issues, challenges and opportunities. I’ll miss exchanging ideas with you on a white board and our “violent agreements” when we were saying the same thing but just arriving at the same conclusion from opposite angles. Thanks for being such a great boss!
  • Reminders. We brought Lauren home to a little condo in Rockville. We brought Carmen home to a townhouse in Germantown. We brought Hope home to this townhouse in Montgomery Village. Almost everyday, I drive by little reminders of life’s precious moments. When I see these reminders, I can’t help but smile, even for just an instant. I will miss driving on White Ground Road, which reminds me of the times Carmen giggled so loud when sunlight flickered through that tree-covered back road and into her eyes that couldn’t see much of anything. I will miss Black Hills Regional Park, where we “got away” to spend time as a family. I will miss “driving into the river” at Whites Ferry. I will miss the creek behind our house, where Lauren and I would go to practice photography. I will miss Panera, where Lauren and I often went for breakfast on Saturday mornings. So many reminders. So many great memories.

  • Short Commute. Since late 2005, I’ve had about a 15 minute commute to work each day and didn’t have to get on any highways at all. I will definitely miss that!
Drivin' 55 on County Highway S11...er, El Camino Real. Notice the houses on the other side of that fence?

I Don't Drive 55 mph to Work in MD

  • Proximity to My Family. I cannot count the times that my Mom, Dad or both of them came down to our house from New York over the past few years. At one point, my Dad kept a bag packed and ready to go if we needed him to come down and help. My brother and his wife live a few short hours north in Philadelphia and we enjoyed going there for weekends or sending Lauren there when we needed a break. To all of our family but, in particular, to my Mom, Dad, Wes and Karen…Lana and I will miss living so close to you and can’t wait for your move to San Diego ;)

Karen and Wes

Phew! That was a lot. Now it’s your turn. Stop and take some time today to think about it. If you were to move away from where you live now, what would you miss?
