I was somewhat randomly watching some videos from Carmen’s second birthday party and it reminded me of just how many amazing people we’ve met because of Carmen. This week, we really want to hear your stories. So to be sure that this is actually a question…what’s your story? Ready? Go!

A few months after Carmen died, we sent Carmen’s VEST to a family in Israel who has two children with Tay Sachs. Well, actually, we (with NTSAD’s help) sent the VEST to NYC where a family member of this family was visiting and then the VEST went with him on a plane to Israel and then on to the family. Whew!

This morning we got the nicest email from the family thanking us again for the VEST and letting us know that their child just celebrated his fifth birthday.

That made me smile.

What a Week

  • Sunday we decided to go to Church of the Redeemer, the church we were a part of for almost eight years but left shortly after Carmen died last summer — it’s the church we still consider “home”
  • We also went to Carmen’s Italian Ice one last time before leaving MD
  • Monday began my last week at work in the MD office
  • Tuesday morning, Shar passed away
  • Tuesday afternoon, ABF took all our belongings away and sent them to CA
  • Wednesday would have been Carmen’s 5th birthday
  • We also had a going away happy hour after work on Wednesday
  • Thursday I started packing up my office to have everything sent to CA
  • My co-workers decorated my office while I was away in a meeting
  • Thursday night we sold the lawn mower on Craigslist (won’t be needing that in CA — wahoo!!!)
  • Our cars were also picked up and started making their way to CA Thursday night
  • Friday was my last day in the office — definitely bittersweet
  • I finished packing up my office in-between multiple meetings and much well-wishing from co-workers
  • I’ve enjoyed the social benefits of leaving a company (all the get-togethers) without the transition-of-responsibility benefits of leaving a company (I still have lots to get done!)
  • Throughout the entire week, we have been getting together with as many people as possible to visit one last time before we leave for the left coast
  • We’ve enjoyed cupcakes, takeout, eat-out, frozen yogurt, and all sorts of other food goodies
  • Lana and I have probably gained 10 pounds each this week — but it is worth it.

What a week indeed. We have come to know and grow close to so many people in this area. For those of you who we only know online, we consider it a privilege to know you. But for those who we know offline, we are that much more thankful to have been a part of your lives for this short while.

No doubt, we are super excited to begin a new chapter in our lives. Yet it is most certainly with great sadness that we will leave you this Monday. You have influenced and impacted us in ways that you’ll likely never know. We are grateful for you and we pray for God’s blessing on your lives.

Thanks so much for being our friends.
