BeautifulCanvas.org: What Does it Mean to You?

By Dave ©, December 1, 2009 2:37 pm

Someone asked me recently what this site is about. I replied with a summary of what I thought this site was about, or at least what I hoped it was about.

…which got me thinking…

What do you think this site is about? What would you say is the purpose of BeautifulCanvas.org? Why does it exist today and why should it continue to exist tomorrow (if it should exist at all)?

Ready? Go!

Lurkers…that includes you too!!!

A Friend Named Joe

By Dave ©, October 12, 2009 8:50 am

I know a man named Joe. Joe is my friend.

A friend, you see, is someone who is there for you when times are troubling.
A friend is there for your family when the days are full of stress.
A friend is someone who prays for you.
A friend listens to you pour out your concerns even though he has concerns of his own.
A friend is encouraging.
A friend corrects you when you are wrong about important things but doesn’t correct you when you are wrong about unimportant things.
A friend understands how you feel because he shares your pain.
A friend knows when to speak and when to be silent.
A friend is compassionate and empathetic.
A friend wants nothing but the best for you.

I know a man named Joe.
I’ve never met Joe but he is my friend.
I wish I was a friend to others the way Joe is a friend to me.

Joe has some concerns right now. Will you please join me and pray for Joe today? If you don’t pray or believe in prayer, that’s OK. But will you at least consider leaving a comment right now to raise the spirits of my friend Joe, a man who is going through some challenging times at the moment?

The Carmen Contest: Another Reminder

By Dave ©, September 28, 2009 10:30 am

This is one last reminder to email us your creative photos with words or images of “Carmen”. We’ll include them in a video montage celebrating how God formed this virtual community through Carmen. You’ll also have a chance to win a fabulous prize!

Thank you for all the photos you’ve sent us so far. We’ve received some really cool ones and can’t wait to share them with you.

Here’s another photo that we took of Carmen at Carmen’s Italian Ice.

The Carmen Contest: A Picture

By Dave ©, September 9, 2009 9:05 am

A couple of weeks ago, Lana posted about “The Carmen Contest“. We’re looking for your creative photos to include in a video celebrating this Beautiful Canvas community. (Carmen’s name on a sign, you in a picture with Carmen’s name, etc.) Send your creative pictures to us and you’ll also have a chance to win a little surprise.

We have received several questions about picture size. The bottom line is this: the bigger the picture the better. If you aren’t sure what size your picture is, don’t let that deter you! Just send the picture and we will work with it.

Here is an example picture that we took earlier this summer.

Website Updates

By Dave ©, July 18, 2009 1:27 am

As mentioned in this post, we’ve decided to make a few changes to the site this weekend. I’m pleased to announce that most of our planned changes have been made. The primary objective, as usual, was to continue improving community. Here are a few things you’ll notice that hopefully improved that aspect of this site:

  • Recent Comments. Look to the right to see the five most recent comments posted on the site. You may not realize this but some comments are placed on older posts. We see them because we receive email notification of every single comment made. And we appreciate comments on older posts to keep conversations going. However, until now, you may have missed these comments…and we don’t want you to miss anything!
  • Reduced Categories. We eliminated a few categories to focus on those that really define this site: adoption, community, family, friends, Tay Sachs, etc.
  • Introduced Tags. Right below the Categories section on the right, you’ll see a new section entitled “Tags.” While these aren’t really what this site is all about, these represent key words used in multiple posts. Examples include: recipes, miracles, etc. You can use these in a similar manner as categories by simply clicking on a tag to see all posts with that particular tag.
  • Threaded Comments. Perhaps the biggest feature added, you can now respond directly to other comments. So rather than just responding back and forth with us, or posting something like, “NY Grandma, I know you really like the picture on the homepage but it had to go in order to make these improvements. If you want to see the picture, you’ll have to come visit us and look at the one hanging over the fireplace,” now, you can simply click the Reply button to respond directly to an individual (kind of like this). Hopefully, this will make the site even more conversational.

We have one more update coming soon and perhaps a few tweaks here and there. I know that some of you are having trouble signing up for post notifications via email and that’s something I’m working on.

Any other issues? Recommendations?

PS. Here’s a picture for Diane. I don’t think we ever posted this one, which was also taken in Ocean City last month.
