Hoping She Stays Put

Thank you for all of your prayers for the baby. Thanks to Monica, Cristie, Karen, Angie and MiYoung who jumped in to help. Cristie, Lauren wants to know when you can come over again to play! I don’t know who cleaned up our kitchen, but thanks so much!

I’ll try to give a brief update. I am on medication that makes me really shaky so typing is a bit of a challenge. I can tell you anything you want to know about Tay Sachs, but I am unfamiliar with the world of pre-term labor so forgive my ignorance!

Yesterday, I went in for another ultrasound to check my cervix. I’ve been having random contractions for weeks now so the doctors keep checking to make sure nothing else is going on. Well, the ultrasound revealed that my cervix went from 3.5cm two weeks ago to 2.1cm yesterday. And I have 2cm of funneling. Apparently that is not good because the doctor sent me straight to the hospital for monitoring. The monitor showed that I was having contractions every 2 minutes. I could feel some of them but not all. I was given three shots of Terbutaline and one tablet. Good gracious that stuff is strong! My heart started racing and I started shaking and feeling woozy. When the nurse realized I was on the verge of passing out, she checked my blood pressure and it was 84/40. She gave me Sprite and the most delicious egg salad sandwich (ha!) and I felt better. The medication worked and the contractions slowed down and stopped.

Poor Dave had just flown to North Carolina on business when I called to tell him what was going on. His boss told him to go back home so Dave got back on a plane and came home. Good bosses shouldn’t be taken for granted, that’s for sure!

Now I am home on strict bed rest. I can get up to go the bathroom and take a shower and then back to bed or the couch I go. Honestly, I don’t think I could do much else anyway as this Terbutaline is making me sick. I am taking 5mg every 4 hours, around the clock.

I have a follow-up appointment in a week and the doctor said something about a test to see how likely I am to deliver in the next two weeks and another cervix check. She also warned me that I may end up in the hospital so to take this bed rest stuff seriously.

So, please, please pray that this baby stays put. I am just 23 weeks and 4 days so she needs a lot more time.

We thought it might be nice if you had a name to pray for instead of just praying for “the baby”. So, we are letting you know that we are naming her Hope. :)

Lana believe it or not I know exactly what you are going through! The only differences are that my cervix shortened when I was 18 weeks and I was admitted to the hospital. It was 3.5 and then it was a 2.1. I stayed overnight and the next morning I was dialated!! They didnt give me the medicine that you had to take, but I did have to have an emergency cerclage put in to make sure the babies’ stayed put! I am 30 weeks today and as time goes on even the cerclage can’t help my cervix….I am a 2.1 now and 2 weeks ago I was a 2.5. So even though it is TERRIBLE…stay in bed!! You are in my prayers!

    Hey Lana & Dave,
Check out this blog of my friend from high school. http://www.musingsonhope.blogspot.com. She’s in a similar situation and has now been admitted to the hospital. Praying for you all and baby Hope!

Sharon, I’m praying for your friend and her little one… I went through a similar situation. I was told when my water broke, that the baby peeing made amniotic fluid. They hoped that our little girl would pee a lot…Conception and birth is certainly an amazing event that should not be take for granted!

Love the name, Lana (and Dave)! We’ll definitely keep your family and especially Hope in our prayers. I’m sure things are scary right now, but rest assured that God has you (and her)in His hands – the safest place to ever be. Keep us updated, and if there’s anything we can do from far away, let us know :)

Thinking about you and baby Hope. I was just on bedrest a few weeks ago and I know how hard it can be–so I am sorry. Just try to have lots of visitors to ease the boredom and don’t do anything ( even though it is so hard not to with the kids ). I hope the medicine works and baby Hope stays in awhile longer.

Hang in there Lana, I’ve been where you are (mostly)with both my boys and remember that nasty stuff well! The good news is that you’re HOME on bed rest, not in the hospital and on some sort of med pump, which I know is done. That’s good! Drink so much water that you want to float, take your meds and HANG IN THERE. Ask Dave sweetly to bring you all the junky magazines your heart desires, listen to all the beautiful music you can, and relax as much as you can. Studies have shown that meditation, which is what prayer can be, is really helpful in preterm labor. Some Ivy league med school did studies, I saw it on PBS, so it must be true! ;-)

We pray for Hope. And hope.

God is good and will always provide “Hope”. God has you in the position to [look up] as you lay in bed and take the time to provide what Hope needs.
I pray that your family will find peace in this time as you are still.
A Madison sister who has tears for your family.
