Moo, Moo, Quack, Quack

As I mentioned in my previous post, we have been sorting through our pictures. Carmen’s pictures bring back so many memories. She was such a pleasant, easy-going baby. She was so content and happy. I hate saying that in past tense. Carmen seems peaceful and content now but very little of Carmen remains. Tay Sachs has taken so much from her.

I found a picture of Carmen in her Baby Einstein exersaucer. She LOVED that thing. She would smack the animal sounds button over and over. Moo, moo, quack, quack!

My friend Nicole let us borrow the exersaucer for Carmen. Nicole was the first person who knew about the possibility of Carmen having Tay Sachs. In fact, she knew before we did. Nicole babysat Lauren while I took Carmen to her pediatric ophthalmologist visit. We thought maybe Carmen was having some vision trouble that was contributing to her developmental delays. The pediatric ophthalmologist took one look in Carmen’s eyes and said she saw something she had only read about- cherry red spots. She immediately called and scheduled an appointment with a retina specialist for later that day. We had no earthly idea what cherry red spots were or the horrid diseases associated with them. I went back to Nicole’s house to pick up Lauren before the retina specialist appointment and told Nicole about the cherry red spots. Nicole’s husband is an optometrist so she found one of his medical books and looked up cherry red spots. She started reading out loud, abruptly stopped and said, “We aren’t going to read about this.” I’m really thankful she didn’t give me the horrible description of Tay Sachs!

Sisters

I have been spending all of my free time sorting through the digital mess on our computer. I am very happy to live in the digital age but I am seeing the necessity of keeping up with the clutter, particularly the pictures! I think we have about 10,000 pictures to weed through. I told Dave this morning that I am actually glad we never deleted anything from the first few months with Carmen because we are finding precious pictures. But, the goal for the future is to SORT and DELETE in a timely manner!

I found this one yesterday. Carmen has given Lauren the opportunity to be a big sister, a role she LOVES. Carmen and Lauren, March 2007

Mother’s Day

Carmen update: Carmen is doing much better! No fever and her breathing sounds good. I am amazed at how fast antibiotics can work!

Today Dave let me sleep in (the best present ever!). When I came downstairs, I found clues to find my presents. Salad tongs (I’ll explain that in a minute) and a framed picture. Last summer Keet Leibowitz created a picture of Lauren and Carmen. The picture represents the future hope we have of Lauren and Carmen playing together in Heaven. Dave framed the picture and the girls gave it to me for Mother’s Day. I LOVE it.

About the salad tongs: Last week I invited a friend over for lunch. Lauren was watching me make a salad and asked if I had salad tongs. I told her that I didn’t and she said that to make a salad, I need tongs. A few days later Dave took Lauren shopping for Mother’s Day and she remembered the tongs. So, that’s what she got for me!

Happy Mother’s Day to all of you moms! I know this is a very hard day for so many of you, especially moms who lost children this year. I always feel that I am on the verge of tears on Mother’s Day. It’s a bittersweet day.

Here is a picture of Lauren and me with Keet’s picture. Carmen was upstairs taking a nap.

Happy Mother’s Day, 2009

Lana, NY Mom, Texas Mom, and Grandma, I hope y’all are having a wonderful Mother’s Day. To all the other moms, “Thank you!” What you do day-in and day-out is remarkable.

Here is a little Mother’s Day greeting from Lauren and me.

A Get Well Kiss for Carmen

Carmen update: Carmen has been brewing something all week. Today she had a 100.1 fever which is very high for her. She often stays around 96-97 degrees. Her breathing was very labored and she seemed very uncomfortable. She had lots of thick secretions. Her pediatrician started her on Azithromycin. Hopefully that will help her.

Thank you for your prayers and I’ll keep you updated!
