Miracle Series – Introduction

By Lana, February 28, 2009 5:54 pm

There is a little girl named Amelia in California who is Carmen’s age and has Tay Sachs. Amelia has an older sister Lauren’s age. Amelia’s mom, Sarah, writes beautifully and often makes me stop and think. Click here if you want to visit her site.

A few days ago, Sarah wrote that she had received a phone call from Hill-Rom that the Vest machine for Amelia would be delivered soon. What she said next is something that we have also experienced in our journey with Carmen.

“Amelia’s pulmonologist told me a few months ago when I requested the Vest that my insurance would not approve both the Cough Assist and Vest. I told him that I’ve had more answered prayer in the last year than I’ve had in my entire life and to just order it. Apparently faith isn’t a criteria for ordering medical equipment. Then again when Amelia was in the hospital he said it would get denied, and we’d have to appeal it. I don’t know why these medical people don’t get it. Our children are angels, and they will be provided for.”

After reading this, I started thinking about all the miracles we have experienced with Carmen. Some of them we have shared, others not. So, stay tuned for the miracles in Carmen’s life!

National Museum of the Amerian Indian

By Lana, February 27, 2009 8:58 am

Last Saturday we (NY Grandparents and all of us) went to the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian. We viewed a small Mayan exhibit and went to a workshop where a Guatemalan woman demonstrated weaving.

Before Carmen was diagnosed, Dave and I talked a lot about wanting Carmen to be proud of her Mayan heritage. We hoped that someday she would want to go back to Guatemala. In fact, Dave mentioned several times that he hoped that Carmen would be a missionary in Guatemala. God had a very different plan for Carmen’s life.

Lauren picked out a couple of dolls from the museum gift shop.

Chocolate Pecan Pie

By Lana, February 25, 2009 10:35 pm

Carmen update: Nothing new going on here which is always good! The C-diff continues but we are hoping that six weeks of Vancomycin might get rid of this Super Bug.

Big thanks to Monica the Magnificent for watching the girls today!

Over Christmas break, NY Grandpa made 7 chocolate pecan pies. Six of us ate all of them. I suspect Dave and Uncle Tony ate more than the rest of us! I am certain I did not eat a whole pie all by myself! Last week NY Grandpa made two of these delicious pies at our house.

I think I should add ‘recipes’ to the categories section on the right!

Chocolate Pecan Pie
1 ½ cups coarsely chopped pecans
6 ounces semisweet chocolate chips
1 9-inch unbaked pie crust
3 large eggs
1 cup Karo Syrup (corn syrup)
½ teaspoon Vanilla extract
¼ cup butter, melted and cooled

Directions: Sprinkle nuts and chips over bottom of pie shell. In medium bowl, whisk together eggs, corn syrup and vanilla. Blend in butter and pour mixture into pie shell. Bake at 325°F for 50 to 60 minutes or until firm. Serve slightly warm or at room temperature.

Face-to-Face with Fame

Ever run out of things to say??? I am having blogger’s block and can’t think of anything to write about! So, I’ll ask a question instead.

Who is the most famous person you’ve had a face-to-face encounter with and what happened?

Cool picture, huh? Great job Dave! If I had any photoshop skills beyond the very basic, I could figure out how to erase the shadows under my eyes!

Edited to add: Kari kindly photoshopped my picture and erased the shadows under my eyes. Too bad we cannot do that in real life! (And make tummies flatter and hips skinnier!) Thank you Kari!!! Here’s the new and improved me.

Chuck E. Cheese is the Best!

By Lana, February 22, 2009 7:05 pm

First of all, happy birthday to my brother, Micah! He turns 19 years old today! (Yes, he is quite a bit younger than I am!) Micah, we hope you have a wonderful day today and we wish we could be there with you to celebrate! Eat lots of lasagna and cookie cake!

Last week we didn’t have internet access for a few days so I wasn’t able to blog about our adventures with the NY Grandparents! Thursday the NY Grandparents, Lauren, Carmen and I went to Chuck E. Cheese for fun and pizza.

I don’t take the girls places by myself very often so having adventures with the NY Grandparents was a very special treat for us!

Here are a few pictures:
