First Snow!
We got snow flurries yesterday!
Lauren ran around on the deck and scraped up every snowflake. Then she ate the snow.
She came inside and we had hot chocolate.
I was busy working on something and Lauren was bored. I found her in the kitchen, surrounded by Styrofoam “snow.” Ah, what a mess! A big, delightful mess!
Totally Yummy Hot Chocolate- one serving
2 Tablespoons sugar
2 Tablespoons Hershey’s Cocoa powder
Dash salt
1 cup milk
1/4 tsp. vanilla
Put all in saucepan. Cook and stir over low heat until hot. Do not boil.
Does it snow where you live? If so, has it snowed yet this year?

We actually got snow yesterday and Thursday. Just a dusting.*sigh* It was just enough to tease us. I am really hoping we have a white Christmas this year.
We have had snow a couple of times. Once a couple of weeks ago that was enough to force a “Snow Day” at school. We had flurries yesterday and today and have probably about 3 inches or so on the ground. I think it is going to be a very long winter in Upstate New York
This morning I was downtown. A pastor and one of his parishoners were maintaining a “Prayer Station” outside the supermarket. It was windy and very cold..about 18 degrees. The Lord blessed them and me when He guided my steps to them and gave me the thought to ask them if they would like me to get some hot chocolate. What a delightful time for all of us. When I came back with three large cups of the sweet cocoa, we visited and shivered in comfort. Your suggestion here of the seasonal beverage created the thoughts to enjoy it with others who are vigilent pray-ers. I practically skipped in joy back to my car.
You are such inspirations to all of us who are traveling on this journey with you through your messages and inclusive offerings.
Keeping you in prayer and praising the Lord for your blessings. In Christ, Betty.
Hi, We got about an inch or two and my son and his friends were sledding, playing football, and he hooked up a wagon to a small tractor and took the neighbors for rides. It was really cool. God bless. In Christ, Joe
Betty, how thoughtful of you! I bet they were so happy for the hot cocoa!
A long time ago Dave and I went to NYC for New Year’s. Dave’s younger brother and a friend came along with us. We were FREEZING in Times Square! We ended up hanging around this one guy from the City. I really wish we had gotten his name. He took off after awhile and came back with cups of hot chocolate for all of us! It wasn’t the greatest hot cocoa (kind of watery) but I’ve never been so happy for a hot drink!
Have we had snow yet??? As Barb said – we’ve already had our first snow day (actually, a bit premature even for us!!). But, up here, once it starts it doesn’t stop for long.
An interesting (I think) story – shows how all things are relative. The grandkids are here for Thanksgiving week. Because they had one day of school this week (which they were skipping so they could have an entire week up here), their dad asked if they could come to my school for that day(ah – the results?? of growing up in an educator’s home!). I made arrangements with the appropriate teachers and spoke to Dakota (the oldest) about our plans. He wondered how he would get to school. I told him that he would drive in with me. He seemed a bit confused and continued to ask me how we would be having school since it was snowing. (I am not relating this as the conversation took place – - I am too old to remember every word!!). After further discussion I realized that, in his world (where he lives), schools close when it snows. I had to then tell him that if we closed our schools in central NY, school would be closed all winter!!! He took that in stride but I have to remember that he comes up here on school vacations and holidays, so he has no reason to think our schools run any differently than his more “southern” school.
I left out that we had our first snow day because we had more than 24 hours of straight snow – and the plows couldn’t keep up. We usually close only for prolonged and very deep snow or ice (more the norm – we have lots of back, hilly roads that can be hard for buses in very bad weather). One town in the next county made it on to the weather channel because they had 25+ inches during that storm.
If I remember correctly our last snow was the day before Easter in 2007. Highly unusual to have snow that late in Texas..actually pretty unusual to have snow at all. It snows every few years. Sometimes it covers the ground, maybe an inch or two, and has remained up to three days. At Christmas in Texas we’re more likely to be using our air conditioner than having snow.
When I was at Lana’s last January it snowed 3 and a half inches and I mentioned making snow ice cream. Someone was there from New York and she had never heard of snow ice cream. Maybe in Texas we find ways to use our snow because it is so uncommon to us.
She is precious! I wish we got snow in San Francisco so my 4 year old step son could experience playing outside in the snow! Last week it was 85 here
Still waiting for it to feel like winter!
