Been Awhile…

The truth is, I’ve been terribly busy over the past month. Work has demanded far more of my time than there are minutes in the day. This week I have to go to California to help kick-start several projects. I am scheduled to fly out tomorrow so I’ll be there Monday morning. And that triggered a conversation between my boss and me yesterday morning. It went something like this.

Boss (who is also supposed to be going to California): I can’t get a direct flight to San Diego on Sunday so you are going to have to go alone. I’ll fly out Monday night and meet you there Tuesday morning.
Me: That’s fine.
Boss (about five minutes later): I can’t get a direct flight into San Diego at all this week.
Me: Why don’t you have <assistant name> switch my flight (I already had a flight booked) and you take mine. I’ll fly into Los Angeles and drive down to San Diego.
Boss: Oh, well if you are going to fly into LA, I’ll fly with you. I just didn’t want to drive down by myself.
Me: That’s fine but you are going to have to go to church with me on Sunday night.
Boss: What kind of church is it?
Me: Don’t worry. You’ll like it.
Boss: OK. Is it a Bible church?
Me: It’s unlike any church you’ve probably ever been to. Don’t worry. You’ll like it.

                                                                              …

About this same time tomorrow night, I should be leaving the Mayan Theatre in downtown LA. This is where Mosaic, a church “Community of Faith, Hope and Love”, meets every Sunday evening. When I have to travel to California, which thankfully isn’t very often, this is where I go to church.

I do not like travelling without Lana and the girls. But I have to be honest, I am a little bit excited about this trip. My boss thinks I am trying to convert her. I think God is simply trying to get her attention.

Please keep the girls in your prayers this week.

You Know You…

I’m sure you’ve all gotten those emails about “You Know You….” were a kid in the 80s, are a Texan, are a New York Yankees fan, etc.

Here’s mine: You know you have a child with Tay Sachs when you spend so much time at the doctor’s that your healthy child draws a No Cell Phones Allowed sign on her Doodle Pro:

So, tell me your “You Know You…”

The Master Painter

Quite often I find pictures around the house that Lauren has drawn. Both my dad and mom and Dave’s dad and grandmother are artists so the artistic gene is quite strong! I did not get any drawing/painting artistic ability so I am very much in awe of anyone who can draw and paint. At age 4, Lauren seems to have a natural artistic talent which I just love! Today I was thinking about how God is the Master Painter. Just about everything we paint or draw or take pictures of is something God has created. I took this picture of a sunset recently and I am just amazed by the colors.

“The heavens declare the glory of God;
the skies proclaim the work of his hands.”  Psalms 19:1, NIV

God’s Picture

Here’s a picture Lauren drew yesterday. Sunflowers are my very favorite flowers (such happy flowers!).

An Apology and Medication

Dear Miss Karen,

I am very sorry I pooped all over you yesterday. My mom says it is not very ladylike to poop on our friends! I try not to do things like that but sometimes they happen. Maybe my mom should move me up to size 7 diapers. You were very kind to help my mom clean me up and I hope the Lysol didn’t bleach your pants!

Love, Carmen

Last night I was getting Carmen’s medicine together and thought I would take a picture. Carmen is on fewer medications than she was a few months ago but she is still on a lot! Carmen gets morning, noon and evening medications plus a couple of medications in the middle of the night. She used to get Robinul for secretions until we switched to the Scopolamine patch. She also used to get Senna and Doculiquid for constipation but that hasn’t been a problem lately with all the diarrhea. Speaking of diarrhea, Carmen will start Vancomycin on Saturday, the second drug to treat C-diff.

We also give Carmen two different probiotics and Juice Plus Veggie and Fruit during the day.

Evening medications, left to right:

Phenobarbital, Keppra, Reglan, Prevacid, Flagyl, water to flush tube, Ativan suppository, Xoponex, Pulmicort, and sponge with Nystatin on it.

Pumpkin Patch Fun

Carmen update: Carmen is having a great week. Her breathing is so even and relaxed that I almost cannot hear her! Normally she sounds like a train. She still has C-diff so I am going to talk to her pediatrician about moving to the next antibiotic. Amazingly, none of us have gotten C-diff!

Lauren and I went on a school field trip to the pumpkin patch. My friend Karen and Helena, the hospice home health aid, stayed home with Carmen. Thanks so much Karen and Helena!

Here are some pictures from the pumpkin patch.

Apparently it is way more fun to pick flowers in the pumpkin patch than dirty pumpkins with slugs on them!
