A Four Year Old Likes Coffee?!

About two years ago, I was making coffee and Lauren asked if she could have some of it. “Sure,” I said, thinking that one tiny sip would cure her for at least the next ten years. Well, it didn’t quite work out the way I planned.

“Mmmmm! Daddy’s coffee is GOOOD!”

Since then, it’s become a bit of a ritual, mostly on weekends. I start making coffee. Lauren asks if she can help. Of course she can. She loves to stir the creamer swirls until they are gone. When we are finished, she takes a sip or two.

Here are a couple of recent pictures. I tried something a little bit different with the first one, bumping up the contrast quite a bit. Not sure if it works but Lauren approved (in fact, she helped me prepare them to post).

Remembering 9/11

We are remembering all of the victims and their family members and friends today.

The Weaver, the Weaving, and the Canvas

While looking for an old picture of Lana to respond to her “Best Meal Ever” post, I found the following in our files. As I understand it, Lana’s dad made it as part of her high school graduation invitation.

Here it is in text in case you cannot read the picture:

The Weaver
My life is but a weaving, between my Lord and me.
I cannot choose the colors. He worketh steadily.
Oftimes He weaveth sorrow, and I in foolish pride…
Forget He sees the upper and I the underside.
Not till the loom is silent and the shuttles cease to fly,
Shall God unroll the canvas and explain the reason why.

I really do believe that God uses pain and sorrow as well as joy and good times to shape us and form our character. In a million years, we would have never asked for a child who is terminally ill. Yet, we really do love Carmen and she has opened our eyes to see the beauty of the imperfect (although it’s not like the rest of us are perfect).

Your turn. How has God used sorrow to mold you and shape you?

Single Best Meal Ever?!

Quick update on Carmen: she woke up with mild fever and is coughing some. She continues to have diarrhea and reduced urine output. We noticed that in the past few weeks Carmen has packed on the pounds. She has always been chubby but I weighed her today and she is up to 33.2 lbs. We are most definitely going to reduce her calories! Maybe these things all go together. The diarrhea, reduced pee, and weight gain. Any ideas what might be going on???

Carmen’s Hospice nurse came by today and, all in all, it appears that Carmen is doing fairly well. Perhaps she will live a good while longer.

I was looking through our pictures and found a picture of Carmen eating her very favorite food, squash. Carmen LOVED squash. I sure wish she could eat squash now.

I need a distraction today so tell me about the single BEST meal you ever ate! I’ll go first. When Dave and I were in England for Dave’s work project, I had a terrible time with the food. I was pregnant and just about everything made me nauseous. Even the water. I could not tolerate mineral water or sparkling water so I would always ask room service or the restaurant staff for tap water. They must have thought I was a weird American! Well, one weekend we drove to Edinburgh, Scotland with a couple of Dave’s coworkers. After walking around doing tourist stuff all day, we stopped at an Italian restaurant. First we had antipasto (marinated vegetables) and I literally almost cried it was so good. And then I had spaghetti and sauce (separated because I could not handle them together!). I think I ooohhhed and aaahhhed over every bite!

Speaking of good food, thank you to Hibst for the amazing buffet of food you brought over yesterday! Salmon, blackened chicken, chicken curry, roasted vegetables, phyllo stuffed with spinach, etc. You are amazing!!!

So, here’s the picture of Carmen so excited about squash! Now, tell me about your best meal ever!

Here She Is….

Lauren got her new glasses yesterday. This is actually the back-up pair from Costco. We ordered purple princess glasses from the eye doctor but they haven’t come in yet.

When she first tried them on at Costco, she got tears in her eyes and said, “Mom, these make it hard for me to see.” Five minutes later she was happily pointing out everything that looked “bigger” to her. Thankfully, she told me that I looked the same!!!

Lauren is very proud of her new look! In fact, she picked out an outfit for church this morning that matched her blue glasses.

So, here is my cutie-pie!
