Something Beautiful

By Lana, September 29, 2008 12:59 pm

Despite all the ugly in the world, sometimes people do something beautiful. This one is for Wes who no longer supplies me with celebrity gossip!

Every penny of Heath Ledger’s estimated $20 million will go to his little girl Matilda Rose, Ledger’s father says.

In his will, which has been probated behind closed doors at the Supreme Court in Perth, Ledger left everything to his parents and three sisters. Many observers expected his former partner Michelle Williams to lodge a claim on the will, which was signed by the actor on April 12, 2003, two years before Matilda was born.

The will left half of the estate to Ledger’s sisters, Kate and Olivia Ledger and Ashleigh Bell.

The remainder was to go to his parents, Kim Ledger and Sally Bell, after debts had been paid.

But Ledger’s father, Kim, says there will be no challenge and the family has given everything to Matilda.

“There is no claim,” Ledger said. “Our family has gifted everything to Matilda.’”

Molly, Riley, Elijah and Nina

By Lana, September 28, 2008 8:53 pm

On Friday, Molly Grace celebrated her 5th birthday! Molly has Tay Sachs and you can read more about this beautiful little girl here, http://www.caringbridge.org/visit/mollygrace.

On Saturday, Riley celebrated her 6th birthday! Riley has Sandhoff, a similar disease to Tay Sachs. You can read more about cutie-pie Princess Riley Bear here, http://www.caringbridge.org/visit/princessrileybear.

Both of these amazing little girls have equally amazing parents. We met Riley at the last NTSAD family conference and hope to see Riley and meet Molly at the next conference. Happy, happy birthday to Molly and Riley!

Big congratulations to Dave’s sister, Trish and her husband, Tony. A week ago, Elijah joined their family. Elijah is an adorable almost 3 year old who was in foster care. Elijah joins big sister Samaiah. Congratulations!!!

Lauren and I had the following conversation today:

Lauren: I want my name to be Nina.

Me: Why?

Lauren: I don’t like the name Lauren. I want you to call me Nina.

Me: Ok, I’ll start calling you Nina.

Lauren: No, I want you to change my name to Nina. My teacher at school calls me Lauren. We have to change my name to Nina so she will call me Nina.

Me: Lauren is a beautiful name!

Lauren: I DON’T like it!

So, here’s a picture of Nina, aka Lauren, with her purple Disney princess Jasmine glasses.

About to Bust out a Smile!

Carmen update: Carmen is doing better. She is on an antibiotic, Clindamycin, for 10 days. She looks more alert and sounds less congested. And she hasn’t had a fever since we started the antibiotic 3 days ago. She continues to have daily diarrhea. I dropped off a two day stool sample yesterday. Carmen’s pediatrician is retesting for C-diff (Clostridium Difficile Colitis), an infection that can be caused by antibiotic use. We switched to Neocate formula so hopefully this will also help Carmen’s digestive issues. Overall, Carmen is doing well!

Edited to add: I just got a call from Carmen’s pediatrician and Carmen does have C-diff. She will be on Flagyl 4 times per day for 14 days to try to get rid of it. Poor Carmen! Two months of diarrhea is no fun at all. We tested for C-diff a while back and the test came back negative. I sure am glad we retested! Apparently it is highly contagious via contact with poop so I sure hope Dave and I and the nurses don’t get it! Lauren stays about 10 feet away from poop diapers so she should be OK.

Dave and I are working on our first answer to your questions and will post this weekend. Great questions!

Thanks to my friend, Karen, who watched Carmen yesterday so I could go to Lauren’s preschool singing. As I was leaving, my neighbor came over and Carmen’s Hospice health aid came by so three grown-ups watched Carmen while I was out! Thanks to Karen for lunch too!

Most of the facial expressions Carmen makes are during seizures. Carmen stopped smiling at 17 months old. Every once in a while we capture a look that makes us smile. Doesn’t it look like Carmen is just about ready to bust out a big smile?!

You Ask, We Answer: Introduction

By Dave ©, September 22, 2008 8:32 am

In the next few weeks, we are going to introduce two new series of posts to help you get to know us a little better and help us get to know you a little better. This is the introduction to the first series, what we’re calling “You Ask, We Answer”. In short, you can ask us any questions you want. We will review your questions and periodically pick one to answer.

You may have seen this type of series if you follow blogs like Whittaker Woman (click here for an example). Our spin on this is that Lana and I will both address the same questions. You’ll get two different responses and occasionally two very different perspectives of the same topic.

Oh, and just in case you are wondering, the second upcoming series will be, “We Ask, You Answer”. More to come in a few weeks or so.

So…what do you want to ask us?

Happy 26 Month Birthday to Carmen!

By Lana, September 21, 2008 2:00 pm

Carmen update: We think she might have a lung infection. Her breathing is more labored and she is drooling out a lot of brown stuff. She still has tons of diarrhea so I hate to put her back on an antibiotic. I will talk to her doctor tomorrow. Also, tomorrow we should be getting a shipment of Neocate formula. Carmen’s pediatrician thinks she needs a formula that is easier to digest since she is having so many digestive problems. Thankfully, it looks like our insurance is going to cover the new, way-more expensive formula.

Happy 26 month birthday to Carmen!!! I am a day late on this but wanted to make sure I posted happy birthday to our sweet little girl! If Carmen makes it 4 more months, we will apply for a Make-A-Wish trip! I sure hope we get to go on a big trip and have some wonderful memories of our family together! (We aren’t in total agreement yet as to where we would go…Dave is still holding out for a “celebrity” meeting with Andy Stanley and Louie Giglio! I have a feeling that Lauren might choose Disney World instead! It’s Carmen’s trip so she will be the deciding vote-ha!)

We are very happy with our new night nurse! She knows her stuff and is very easy to have in our home. This is a huge answer to prayer! We now have 7 nights per week covered and we are much more rested. We are looking for a third nurse to sub in when our two need a break.

We rarely take a picture of just Dave and me together. But, we now have a very willing little budding photographer in our house, so here’s a picture!
